81 charged as federal agents dismantle the "Los Baja Deo" gang in western Puerto Rico

340 kg fentanyl · 2,200 kg cocaine alleged distributedMayagüez, Puerto Rico81 charged, 70 arrested

Attorney General Todd Blanche travelled to Puerto Rico on August 27 to announce federal charges against 81 alleged members of Los Baja Deo, a drug-trafficking organisation that prosecutors say has run open-air drug points around Mayagüez since 2021. Seventy of the defendants were taken into custody the previous day in a takedown the FBI says required 13 SWAT teams and Critical Incident Response Group aircraft, working with the Puerto Rico Police Department and the DEA's Caribbean Division under the Homeland Security Task Force in San Juan. Over the life of the conspiracy the group is alleged to have moved at least 340 kilograms of fentanyl or fentanyl-laced product and at least 2,200 kilograms of cocaine — along with heroin, crack and marijuana sold within 1,000 feet of more than a dozen public housing projects — generating upwards of $49 million; investigators recovered 21 firearms, and FBI Director Kash Patel said the network also mailed drugs to the mainland through the U.S. Postal Service.

Coast Guard cutter takes 3.3 tonnes of cocaine off a smuggling boat south of Puerto Rico, then burns the boat

3,288 kg cocaineCaribbean Sea, 50 mi south of Puerto Rico5 detained

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon stopped a suspected smuggling vessel roughly 50 miles south of Puerto Rico on August 22 and removed about 7,250 pounds — some 3,288 kilograms — of cocaine, a load the service valued at $54.5 million wholesale. Five people aboard were detained pending further investigation, and the boat itself was destroyed on the water because it had become a hazard to navigation. Customs and Border Protection air and marine crews out of Air Station Miami cued the intercept; the Coast Guard released the details on August 27.

Sinaloa cook who bought Chinese precursors and made "several metric tons" of fentanyl pleads guilty in Washington

Washington, D.C. / Culiacán, Mexico1 guilty plea

Hernán Geovani Ojeda Elenes, 48, of Culiacán, pleaded guilty on August 27 before U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes to conspiring to manufacture and distribute fentanyl for importation into the United States and to conspiring to distribute listed chemicals. According to the plea, from 2019 through 2024 he worked with his father and co-defendant Hernán Domingo Ojeda López to run a Sinaloa-based operation that ordered precursors such as 4-piperidone and N-phenylpiperidin-4-amine from Chinese suppliers, shipped them to a Mexican laboratory and turned out what prosecutors describe as several metric tons of fentanyl for the U.S. market. Ojeda Elenes was transferred from Mexico in January 2026 under Mexico's national security law and faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life; no sentencing date has been set.

Dominican cocaine broker who fled to Colombia is extradited to face charges in Puerto Rico and New Jersey

San Juan, Puerto Rico / Newark, New Jersey1 extradited

Erick Randhiel Mosquea Polanco, 45, described by the DEA as a Regional Priority Organizational Target and known as "Ramón" and "E," was flown from Colombia to Puerto Rico on August 26 and made his first court appearance there on August 27. He is named in two Puerto Rico indictments dating to 2016 and 2022 covering cocaine importation from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Colombia, and in a New Jersey superseding indictment alleging he led a network that moved more than a thousand kilograms of cocaine through New Jersey and New York between January 2020 and September 2023 while laundering the proceeds back to the Dominican Republic. He was arrested in Colombia in December 2024 after leaving the Dominican Republic on false documents; investigators seized dozens of kilograms of cocaine and more than $6 million during the case, and several co-defendants have already been convicted.

Colombia — second airstrike of the De la Espriella government hits a FARC dissident camp in Guaviare

11 rifles · 5 machine gunsEl Retorno, Guaviare, Colombia

Colombian forces bombed camps used by the Jorge Suárez Briceño Bloc, part of the FARC dissident structure commanded by alias "Calarcá," in rural El Retorno, Guaviare, in the pre-dawn hours of August 27. President Abelardo de la Espriella put the immediate toll at eight dead with 11 rifles and five machine guns recovered; the Fiscalía later reported 11 dissidents killed in the operation, code-named Amón. It was the second bombing raid ordered since De la Espriella took office on August 7 and the first carried out under the military and police command he installed the same week. The government frames the campaign as an attack on the armed groups' drug-trafficking finances; alias "Uría Perdomo" was reported among the dead.

Colombia — every trafficking group is now to be treated as "terrorist" under a new presidential directive

Colombia

President Abelardo de la Espriella issued an order on August 27 requiring Colombia's army, navy, air force and police to classify any criminal group involved in drug trafficking, illegal mining, extortion or smuggling as terrorists and to operate against them as a single unified force. The stated aim is to open up tougher judicial and financial prosecution routes. Colombia has applied the terrorism label to guerrilla organisations such as the FARC and ELN for five decades, but extending it wholesale to trafficking and mining structures leaves the legal consequences unsettled; the move follows the U.S. designation of 20 Latin American criminal groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and similar steps in Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Guatemala. InSight Crime notes that past designations have tended to shift trafficking routes rather than shrink them.

47 kg cannabis (skunk)Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

Routine screening at Eduardo Gomes International Airport in Manaus on August 26 turned up about 47 kilograms of a substance with the characteristics of skunk cannabis across two separate incidents. In the first, an X-ray image flagged a suitcase whose owner never boarded and whose identity documents were found discarded nearby. In the second, two bags were offloaded after the passenger who checked them failed to appear at the gate; a re-inspection found more of the same material. The Federal Police in Amazonas released the details on August 27 and are still working to identify those responsible.

Ecuador — "parallel courier" network shipping cocaine to the US and Europe broken up after a year-long probe

Police and prosecutors executed operation Encuentro 119, code-named Columbus, across Guayas, Manabí and Pichincha on the night of August 26, detaining five people — four Ecuadorians and a Mexican — accused of handling planning, logistics, transport, export and security for a cocaine export ring. Investigators say the group spread consignments across multiple courier companies and modified the internal structure of luggage to defeat export screening, a technique they call "parallel couriers." Seized in the raids were more than 1.8 kilograms of cocaine, $35,125 in cash, a firearm, a vehicle and five mobile phones.

The Guardia Civil and Portugal's Guarda Nacional Republicana announced on August 28 that operation Tridente had dismantled a network using the Guadiana river as a smuggling corridor between the two countries. Surveillance led officers to a stash house in Ayamonte, Huelva in the early hours of August 20, where three members of the group were caught with 132 bales weighing 5,280 kilograms. Two days later, on August 22, the two forces raided a second stash house on the Portuguese bank and found a further 133 bales weighing 5,320 kilograms. The combined haul of 265 bales came to 10,600 kilograms of hashish, one of the Guardia Civil's largest; ten people were arrested and nine vehicles and three firearms seized.
