Marines sink a sanctioned "floating refueling station" that supplied Ecuador's Los Choneros in the Eastern Pacific

1 vessel sunkEastern Pacific Ocean, off Ecuador

Acting on Gen. Francis Donovan's orders and coordinating with Ecuador, Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere intercepted a vessel in international waters of the Eastern Pacific on August 28 that intelligence tied to a Treasury-sanctioned fuel-supply network for the Los Choneros trafficking organization. Marines and sailors launched from the amphibious transport USS San Antonio boarded, searched and cleared the ship without incident, ferried the people aboard safely to Ecuador, and then sank the empty vessel. SOUTHCOM described the boat as a key logistics node rather than a drug-carrying vessel itself, and no strike, casualties or drug seizure were reported — a notably different kind of action from the lethal strikes SOUTHCOM has carried out elsewhere in the Caribbean and Pacific this month.

Walmart to pay $50 million after DOJ says its pharmacists knowingly filled invalid opioid prescriptions

$50 million settlementNationwide

The Justice Department and the DEA announced on August 28 that Walmart will pay $50 million to settle a civil complaint, first filed in December 2020, alleging that pharmacists and compliance staff at Walmart pharmacies nationwide knowingly filled thousands of invalid prescriptions for opioids and other controlled substances dating back to June 2013 — including scripts from known "pill mill" prescribers and orders with obvious red flags such as dangerous opioid combinations, excessive high-dose refills and repeated early-fill requests. As part of the resolution, Walmart also entered into a memorandum of agreement with the DEA governing how it will handle controlled-substance dispensing going forward.

The NYPD called it its largest cocaine seizure in more than a decade and linked the case to suspected middlemen for an international cartel; two more people were taken into custody as the investigation continues.

Tumaco, Colombia and San Lorenzo, Ecuador

SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis Donovan met Colombian defense minister Jorge Mora and Ecuadorian defense minister Gian Carlo Loffredo in Tumaco and San Lorenzo on August 27 to advance plans for a binational base on the two countries' shared Pacific border, part of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition all three governments have now joined. Officials described the frontier as a longstanding bottleneck for cocaine traffic and said the talks centered on sharing intelligence, improving interoperability between the three militaries and coordinating operations to close smuggling routes along the coast.
