SOUTHCOM boards and sinks a fourth Los Choneros refueling vessel in nine days — no strike, no deaths
On September 5, Marines and sailors launched from the USS San Antonio boarded a "multi-vessel" floating refueling station — a mother boat towing smaller fuel craft — used to resupply drug runs for Ecuador's Los Choneros gang in the Eastern Pacific, removed the crew, transferred them to Ecuadorian authorities and sank the vessels once cleared. It was the fourth such non-lethal boarding of a Los Choneros refueling vessel since August 28, after nearly identical operations on September 2 and 3, a run of boat-and-search actions distinct from the lethal missile strikes that have killed 227 people over the past year and drawn sustained congressional criticism.
