SOUTHCOM boards and sinks a sixth Los Choneros refueling vessel in eleven days, as Ecuadorian judges free dozens of crew from earlier boardings
On September 8, Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere boarded and sank the fishing vessel Don Rufo in the eastern Pacific — the sixth floating fuel depot tied to Ecuador's Los Choneros gang that U.S. forces have destroyed since the campaign began August 28 — and turned its captured crew over to Ecuadorian authorities rather than killing them. The interdiction came as Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Quito on a September 8-10 tour of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru to discuss counter-cartel cooperation, and as Ecuadorian judges separately freed 28 crew members from earlier-seized vessels on Saturday and another 32 on Tuesday, both times citing insufficient evidence tying them to Los Choneros — releases their lawyers say show prosecutors have no case against them.
